Halo by Arlo Stone: The Epitome of Coastal Luxury and Mediterranean-Inspired Design
Behind the Design
Nestled in the tranquil beachside suburb of Buddina on the Sunshine Coast, Halo masterfully blends Mediterranean-inspired design with modern Australian architecture, embodying the essence of coastal luxury.
The visionary team behind Arlo Stone showcase their expertise in high-quality stonework with floor-to-ceiling limestone detailing, marble flooring, and striking off-form concrete accents throughout. After just 18 months from conception to completion, the result is a unique residence that is as thoughtfully designed as it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Go Behind the Design of Halo
“The reaction that we see all the time when we bring new people through the house is just, ‘Wow'."
— Jarrad
Halo's entrance exudes unassuming elegance, offering a subtle glimpse of the unapologetic coastal opulence within. Natural limestone and raw concrete cladding create a neutral yet textured backdrop, allowing the feature palm tree and grand arched entryway to remain the focus.
"We wanted to keep it sort of unassuming from the front entry," says Josh. "I think the facade itself is actually quite simple, but because of the scale, it's quite striking."
"Having Arlo really helps us to take our project to the next level — we incorporated things that you wouldn't normally see in everyday designs," says Jarrad.
"For example, our entry allows us to lay full-length slabs of marble as a pathway to lead you into the house while you're walking next to this 70 square metres or so worth of natural stone which has been added to a brick wall."
From skylights to baseboard windows and a central, seven-metre-arched picture window that mirrors the pool beyond, Halo seamlessly brings the outdoors in while shielding the home from the harsh Queensland elements. The unique U-shape, north-facing block house design ensures no shortage of natural light, creating an ethereal-like glow throughout the year — perhaps inspiration for the home's ethereal name.
"Natural light when designing for us is very top of the list," says Jarrad. "When we landed on the property, we first of all took in the aspect and how the sun moves around the block and where we are — everything in this house is designed strategically to face north."
“I think, for where we are — we’re in a suburban property — the mature landscaping was very important,” says Josh. “We incorporated a lot of stone and off-form timber board concrete. I think the blend of tropical landscaping and concrete together really gives that ‘on-holiday’ feel.”
“Kind of where organic meets industrial,” agrees Jarrad. “It's just a really lovely combination.”
While brushed gunmetal tapware dominates Halo, sporadically infused brushed brass accents reaffirm warmth and serve as a striking feature, particularly in spaces like the downstairs powder room (pictured above).
In the kitchen, fluted Viola marble takes centre stage on the island bench while travertine adorns the backsplash. All of this is again complemented by our brushed brass through the Milani Swivel Hob Mixer Set.
"I think the Viola's a pretty standout," says Josh, "and using the brushed brass in the kitchen really added a bit of a feature, bringing the warmth and that more organic finish into the heart of the home."
Upstairs, an adult retreat occupies the entire left wing of the home. It is accompanied by a private study and an expansive ensuite that extends past the central balcony for a truly private, spa-like experience.
Beyond the cinema room and two additional bedrooms, the upstairs has a private rooftop offering breathtaking views of distant crashing waves, Mt. Coolum, The Glasshouse Mountains, and Morton Island.
“With all the marbles, natural stones, and concrete elements, we wanted to lean on a tapware product, which was going to blend in with what we used and not overpower it,” says Jarrad. “The natural option to use was the timeless gunmetal. The gunmetal just leans itself into the marble.”
“It’s small but a big feature in [one of] the ensuites — the Pixi tapware,” says Josh. “A lot of people see that and go ‘Wow! How did you do that?’, but that’s a part of the ABI range.”
“ABI was the obvious choice for us. It’s a timeless design, it’s a very good quality finish — which we can stand-by given we’ve used it before, and we’re using it again,” says Josh.
“It was really easy for us to go back to ABI — the team are amazing to work with,” agrees Jarrad.
“We wanted to challenge ourselves not to do something that was ‘standard’, but also not too crazy,” says Josh. “We’ve chosen all these different surfaces — in the tiles, the render, the concrete, and the stone — and we’ve created this harmonious blend of luxury, contemporary, and practical.”
“I think what we’ve done is opened up people’s minds in terms of what you can and can’t do,” says Jarrad. “We’re re-introducing the way people can design homes and live in their homes.”
